A domain can be registered either to an individual or to a legal entity. Corporate registration matters for protecting the brand and keeping the business stable.

  • Legal protection — the domain belongs to the company, not to a particular employee
  • Protection under UDRP — in disputes a registered trademark takes priority
  • Corporate WHOIS — public data shows the company, not an employee
  • Tax accounting — domain costs are recorded as business expenses

Requirements for a .ua Domain

To register a domain in the .ua zone you need:

  • A document confirming the right to use the name (a trademark or a registry extract)
  • A EDRPOU code (for Ukrainian legal entities)
  • The domain must match the company name or the trademark

Example: Alfa LLC can register its name as a Cyrillic IDN domain, or the transliterated alfa.ua.

Requirements for a .com.ua Domain

The .com.ua zone is open without restrictions — any individual or legal entity can register any free name with no supporting documents.

Documents for Registering a .ua Domain

Applicant typeRequired documents
LLC / JSCEDRPOU extract + trademark confirmation
Sole proprietorSole proprietor registry extract + tax ID
IndividualPassport + tax ID + trademark confirmation
💡 Recommendation: If the company owns a registered trademark, be sure to register a .ua domain. It is the most reliable way to protect a brand in Ukraine.

Transferring a Domain When the Owner Changes

When the director changes or the company is reorganised, the domain stays with the legal entity. Transferring it to an individual or to another company requires an official request and a rights transfer agreement.

⚠️ Risk of personal registration: If a domain is registered to an employee as an individual, they can take the domain with them when they leave. Always register corporate domains to the company.

Common Reasons for Registration Rejection

Rejection reasonWhat happenedHow to fix it
The domain doesn't match the company nameThe .ua registrar requires the domain name to match the name in the EDRPOU registry or a registered trademarkApply for a domain that actually matches the name, or register the trademark first
The trademark certificate has expiredThe trademark cited as the basis is no longer valid as of the application dateRenew the trademark registration with Ukrpatent before applying for the domain
Data mismatch between the extract and the applicationA typo in the company name or EDRPOU code between the document and the registration formCheck every character of the extract against the application before submitting
The domain is already registered to an employee as an individualWhen the company was founded, the domain was mistakenly registered to the director or a marketer personallyComplete an official transfer of the domain to the company through the registrar
The application was rejected with no specific reason givenThe registrar considered the documents formally incomplete but didn't say what was missingAsk the registrar for a written explanation and resubmit with the full document set

Comparing Registration for a Sole Proprietor vs. an LLC

CriterionSole proprietorLLC
Documents for .uaSole proprietor registry extract + tax IDEDRPOU extract + trademark confirmation
LiabilityPersonal assetsLimited to the charter capital
Transfer when selling the businessHarder — the domain counts as a personal assetEasier — the domain stays a company asset
  • A personal blog or portfolio with no commercial activity can be registered to an individual
  • A test or hobby project unlikely to grow into a business
  • The company has no registered trademark yet and no plan to get one — in that case .ua may simply be unavailable, leaving the unrestricted .com.ua zone
  • A short ad campaign lasting a few months, after which the domain will be dropped

Before registering a domain to a company, it's worth checking its history and current owner — see "How to Check Domain WHOIS: Online Services and Command Line". If a brand is already used in a similar domain by someone else, the protection procedure is covered in "Brand Protection Online: Domains, Trademarks, and UDRP".

Verifying the Result

After registration, confirm the owner is shown correctly in the public data:

# Check the owning organization in WHOIS
whois example.ua | grep -i "registrant\|organization\|org"

# Make sure the domain is active and delegated
dig NS example.ua +short

# Check the registration expiry date
whois example.ua | grep -i "expire\|expir"

If an individual is shown instead of the company name, contact the registrar with a request to correct the contact data.

In borderline or disputed cases, it's cheaper to consult the registrar before submitting the application than to redo the paperwork after a rejection.
