Forgetting to renew your domain is one of the most expensive mistakes in web business. Losing a domain means losing traffic, SEO authority and customer trust. Let's look at how to avoid it.

Domain lifecycle after expiration

PeriodDurationStatusCost
ActiveUntil expirationWorks normallyStandard
Grace Period0–45 daysSite is downStandard
Redemption Period30 daysRestore only$50–200
Pending Delete5 daysRestoration impossible—
Deleted—Available for registrationStandard
⚠️ Critical: After Pending Delete the domain immediately goes to auction or to drop-catchers. It can be registered within seconds of being released. Restoring it is no longer possible.

How to set up auto-renewal

In the ZevsHost panel:

  1. Log in to Client Area → Domains
  2. Select the domain → Manage
  3. Enable Auto-renewal
  4. Make sure your balance has enough funds
💡 Tip: ALWAYS enable auto-renewal. Even if you are sure you will not forget — illness, a business trip or a changed mailbox can get in the way. Auto-renewal costs pennies for peace of mind.

Setting up reminders

ZevsHost sends email notifications:

  • 60 days before expiration
  • 30 days before expiration
  • 7 days before expiration
  • 1 day before expiration

Make sure your profile has an up-to-date email address. Also add a reminder to your calendar.

What to do if the domain has expired

  1. Grace Period (up to 45 days): renew it at the regular price in your client area
  2. Redemption Period (30 days): contact ZevsHost support — restoration is paid ($50–200)
  3. Pending Delete: nothing can be done — watch for the release and get ready to re-register quickly

Competitors grabbed the domain — what to do

If someone else has already registered the domain:

  • Try to negotiate a buyback through the WHOIS contacts
  • File a complaint through UDRP (if your trademark has been infringed)
  • Register a similar domain in another zone (.net, .com.ua)

Common Situations and Messages During Renewal

SituationCauseWhat to do
Auto-charge failed, payment declinedThe card linked to auto-renewal has expired, was declined by the bank, or the account balance is insufficientUpdate the payment method in your account; consent to auto-charging can be withdrawn at any time
"Domain is not eligible for renewal"The domain has already passed the normal term and entered the Redemption PeriodContact ZevsHost support — recovery during this period is paid and may not be available for every domain zone
Renewal price higher than the first-registration priceStandard registrar practice: a discounted price applies only to the first year, renewal is billed at the regular rateCheck the current renewal price in your account before buying a domain on a promotional offer
Renewal reminder never arrived by emailThe email on file is outdated, or the message landed in the "Spam" folderCheck the "Spam" folder and confirm the current email under Account → Profile

Auto-Renewal vs. Manual Renewal

CriterionAuto-renewalManual renewal
Requires the owner's attentionNo, as long as the balance is sufficientYes — you have to remember and log in
Risk of losing the domain by forgettingMinimalHigher, especially without reminders enabled
Consent to chargingA separate explicit consent, withdrawable in your account at any timeNot required — a one-off payment on click
When funds are chargedAutomatically, close to the expiry dateThe moment you click "Renew" yourself

When Auto-Renewal Won't Save You

  • The balance is insufficient and there's no linked top-up method — auto-renewal simply won't fire, a reminder will arrive but no payment
  • The domain is locked for a reason unrelated to payment (a legal dispute or an abuse complaint, for example) — the charge will go through, but it won't lift the lock
  • The email on file changed, but notifications keep going to the old address — auto-renewal is technically on, but no one finds out about the problem in time
  • The domain was recently transferred to ZevsHost from another registrar — auto-renewal settings don't carry over automatically with the transfer and need to be turned on again

Verifying the Result

# Compare the expiry date after renewal
whois yourdomain.com | grep -i expir

# Expected result: Expiry Date has moved forward by the renewal term
  1. Go to Account → Domains and confirm the domain shows the status "Auto-renewal enabled"
  2. A day or two after the expected charge, check the payment history — a renewal transaction should appear there
  3. Run a WHOIS query and compare the Expiry Date — the new date should differ from the old one by exactly the renewal term
  4. Check your email, including the "Spam" folder, for a renewal confirmation message from ZevsHost

The terms of automatic renewal and how to opt out of it for different service types are set out in the ZevsHost public offer; for specific cases and disputed payments, contact support. What the domain statuses in a WHOIS record mean is covered in what WHOIS is, and recovering an already-expired domain is covered in recovering an expired domain.
