Domain Types in cPanel
- Addon Domain — a full additional website with its own directory and its own content
- Parked Domain — an alias for your main domain that shows the same content
- Subdomain — a subdomain of the main domain (blog.yourdomain.com), also with its own directory
Adding an Addon Domain
- In cPanel open "Domains" → "Addon Domains"
- Enter the new domain's name in the "New Domain Name" field
- cPanel will suggest a directory name and a helper subdomain automatically — the defaults are fine
- Click "Add Domain"
The domain will appear in the "Domains" list as an active site, but it will only open once DNS is configured correctly — adding an addon domain in cPanel does not change anything at your registrar by itself. This approach is convenient for agencies and freelancers: one hosting account can host several clients' sites at once, each in its own directory, with separate databases and mailboxes.
DNS Configuration
For the domain to point to your hosting, create an A record at your domain registrar pointing to your account's IP:
A @ [your hosting IP]
A www [your hosting IP]
You will find the hosting IP address in cPanel under "General Information" on the main page. If the domain was bought somewhere other than ZevsHost, the records are edited there — in the registrar's panel, not in cPanel.
There is another option: hand DNS management over to the hosting entirely by pointing the registrar's NS records to ZevsHost's nameservers instead of an A record. Then every record, including the mail MX, is edited through Zone Editor in cPanel rather than the registrar's panel. This is more convenient when the domain and its mail live on the same account, but it requires the separate step of changing NS records, which propagates slower than a single A record.
Real Errors When Adding a Domain
If you try to add a domain that is already taken, cPanel refuses to create the Addon Domain and shows a specific reason:
Sorry, the domain you are trying to add as an Addon Domain
is already setup as an Addon Domain, Alias, or Subdomain
on your account or another account on the server.
This means the domain is already attached to another account on the same server — for example, left over from previous hosting or added by mistake earlier. Another common error appears with an invalid name format:
The domain you have entered is not properly formatted.
It happens because of extra characters, an http:// prefix typed into the field, or non-ASCII characters without a punycode conversion — cPanel only accepts an ASCII-compatible domain spelling. A third message is not an error but a warning that appears if the domain's DNS is not yet pointed to the server at the moment you add it:
Warning: This domain is not properly pointed to this server.
This may cause issues with the account being used properly.
Are you sure you want to continue?
This warning is safe to dismiss and continue — cPanel simply prepares the directory and virtual host in advance, and the site opens as soon as DNS propagates.
Addon Domain, Parked Domain, and Subdomain: Which to Pick
| Type | Own directory | Own content | When to use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Addon Domain | Yes | Yes | A separate project on the same account |
| Parked Domain | No | No, mirrors the main one | An alternate brand spelling, a synonym domain |
| Subdomain | Yes | Yes | A section of the main site: blog., shop., app. |
When Adding via cPanel Is Not the Right Fit
- The domain is still delegated to another host's NS servers — until you change the NS or A record at the registrar, adding it in cPanel will not make the site open
- The domain is actively used on another account with the same provider — remove it there first, otherwise you will get the "already setup as an Addon Domain" error
- You need a dedicated IP for the domain — on a shared plan, every domain on the account shares the server's common IP
- You are planning a full registrar transfer — that is a separate transfer procedure, not simply adding the domain in cPanel
Verifying the Result
- Check that the A record is visible externally:
dig +short yourdomain.comshould return your hosting IP - Open the domain in an incognito browser window to rule out an old DNS cache
- Confirm that the content from the Addon Domain folder opens, not the account's main site
Propagation of a new DNS record around the world can take anywhere from a few minutes to a few hours depending on the previous record's TTL. If the site still shows old content after changing DNS, the problem is almost always DNS caching, not a cPanel setting — see the article on Zone Editor and DNS records for details. For subdomains instead of a separate domain, see the article on creating subdomains in cPanel.
